A decisive third-quarter scoring drought spoiled Sophomore Night for Taft College, as the Cougars fell 61-54 to Reedley on Saturday afternoon in Taft, Calif.
Taft carried a 37-31 lead into halftime after a strong second quarter, but Reedley seized control out of the break, outscoring the Cougars 16-4 in the third quarter to flip the game and take a 47-41 advantage into the fourth. Reedley then maintained its cushion down the stretch, answering Taft’s late pushes to close out the seven-point victory.
The afternoon began on a celebratory note as Taft recognized seven sophomores in a pregame ceremony. Players were escorted by family members who joined them at midcourt and took part in a lighthearted, high-five tunnel with the starting five before tipoff, setting an upbeat tone for the Cougars as they took the floor.
On the court, the matchup opened evenly with the teams trading baskets in a 21-21 first quarter. Taft asserted itself in the second behind improved defensive pressure and work on the glass, outscoring Reedley 16-10 to build the 37-31 halftime lead. The Cougars dominated the boards throughout, finishing with 60 rebounds, including 29 on the offensive end, which created numerous second-chance opportunities.
Cold shooting, however, undercut that advantage. Taft shot 21-for-81 from the field (25.9 percent) and 3-for-25 from 3-point range (12.0 percent), and the Cougars were unable to fully capitalize at the free-throw line, going 9-for-20 (45.0 percent). Those missed chances loomed largest in the third quarter, when Taft managed just four points as Reedley turned stops into transition and half-court scores to swing momentum.
Sophomore forward Madyn Kassatly led Taft with a double-double, posting 15 points and 12 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass, while adding three steals and two assists in 33 minutes. Laila Gines provided perimeter scoring with 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. In the paint, Alesha Gordon anchored the interior with 8 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, seven of them offensive, and Nasia Thompson supplied an efficient lift inside with 4 points, nine rebounds and a block in 12 minutes.
Defensively, the Cougars were active, finishing with 12 steals and four blocks, forcing Reedley into mistakes and giving themselves repeated chances to climb back in the fourth quarter. Despite those efforts and a late push, Taft could not overcome the third-quarter swing, but the performance on the glass and the production from the sophomore core provided a fitting snapshot of the group honored before tipoff as the Cougars move through the stretch run of the season.
