Across Texas, the sound of dedicated student musicians is filling auditoriums and rehearsal halls as TAPPS orchestra sections step into the spotlight. From Tomball to Lubbock, string, wind, and percussion players are representing their schools with pride in solo and small ensemble competitions, each performance adding up to something bigger than a single piece of music — it’s shaping school spirit, building championships, and celebrating the power of teamwork.

This year, TAPPS staff is truly on the move, making the rounds across the state to support music solo and small ensemble contests. The week begins in Tomball, then continues through San Antonio, Austin, and Fort Worth, with additional competitions hosted in Midland and Lubbock. At every stop, orchestra performers from strings, winds, and percussion step forward not just as individual musicians, but as vital members of their school’s musical community.

Each section brings something essential to the stage. String players lay the foundation, weaving rich harmonies and lyrical melodies that often anchor the ensemble sound. Wind players add color and character, from soaring flute and clarinet lines to bold brass statements that lift the energy of every piece. Percussionists provide the heartbeat, offering both rhythmic drive and subtle texture that keep the group united and expressive. Together, these sections showcase the full range of orchestral talent flourishing across TAPPS schools.

The impact of these performances goes well beyond applause at the end of a piece. The points earned at the regional competitions are included in each school’s totals for the overall band, orchestra, and vocal championships. That means every carefully tuned note, every well-blended chord, and every steady beat contributes directly to school-wide success. Students aren’t just performing for themselves; they are lifting their classmates and representing their campuses in a championship race that rewards consistency, discipline, and musical excellence.

Bryan Bunselmeyer - Executive Director
We look forward to the solo and small ensemble competitions each year as they provide the opportunity for the band, orchestra and vocal students to perform their disciplines under one roof at the same time. Thank you to all of our directors for leading our students and congratulations to all of our students who are performing.

And the season’s momentum is still building. Looking ahead, the medium and large ensembles will travel to central Texas to perform in Temple in April. There, full string sections, expanded wind groups, and robust percussion lines will come together on a bigger stage, showcasing the growth that began in solos and small ensembles. It’s a powerful next step in their musical journey — taking skills honed in intimate settings and bringing them to life in large, coordinated performances.

Through it all, the focus remains squarely on student development and opportunity. TAPPS looks forward to hearing the performances from all of the students attending the regional sites, knowing that each event is a building block in their musical story. These experiences help players gain confidence, refine their technique, and understand their unique role within an ensemble, whether they’re bowing a final note, sustaining a clarinet phrase, or landing a perfectly timed cymbal crash.

From the first tuning note in Tomball to the final chord in Temple, TAPPS orchestra sections are proving that strings, winds, and percussion are more than categories on a program — they are the voices of a vibrant, hard-working community of young musicians. Their achievements this season are strengthening their schools, elevating music programs across the state, and setting the stage for even greater performances in the years to come.
