Tree of Life Christian School battled through a tightly contested four-set match Wednesday night, falling to Worthington Christian 3-1 by scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 in Westerville. Even in defeat, the Trojans showed resilience throughout the evening, staying within reach in every set and adjusting on the fly as different lineups were tested.
The match opened with Tree of Life grabbing the first set, 25-21, a strong start that reflected the team’s energy and ability to finish points. Worthington Christian answered in the second set with a 25-19 win, then held the Trojans at 25-22 in the third before closing the match with another narrow 25-21 decision in the fourth. The scores told the story of the night, with little separation between the teams and long stretches where momentum could have swung either way.
Calvin Spitznagle turned in one of the Trojans’ top performances, finishing with 17 kills and two solo blocks. His presence at the net gave Tree of Life a reliable point-producing option and helped fuel several of the team’s strongest stretches.
Tree of Life also got steady play from setter Sam Kutnow, who delivered 33 assists while helping guide the offense through multiple lineup combinations. That flexibility became a key part of the match as the Trojans experimented with different looks as well as testing out a 5:1 offense and still managed to remain competitive in each set. The ability to adjust without losing composure was one of the clearest positives to come out of the night.
Although Worthington Christian ultimately claimed the final three sets, Tree of Life’s response throughout the match gave plenty for the Trojans to build on. Every game was close, and the effort level remained high from start to finish. Against a strong opponent, the Trojans showed fight, balance and the kind of adaptability that can pay off as the season moves forward.
