Union Grove High School used a dominant second half and a balanced offensive attack to pull away from Badger for a 90-73 boys basketball victory Wednesday night in Lake Geneva.

The turning point came early in the second half. Clinging to a 53-50 lead with 12 minutes to play, the Broncos answered Badger’s push with a 6-0 run and never looked back, stretching the margin to double digits by the 8:46 mark. From there, Union Grove controlled the tempo, repeatedly breaking Badger’s full and half-court pressure, getting to the rim and sealing the outcome at the free-throw line.

Senior guard Griffin Schultz powered the Broncos with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, doing most of his damage after halftime. Schultz scored 26 points in the second half alone and gave Union Grove the lead for good at 45-43 on a 3-pointer. He was highly efficient inside the arc, going 7-for-8 on 2-point attempts and also drawing a charge on the defensive end to help spark the team’s intensity.

Union Grove’s offense was in rhythm from the start, thanks to a fast opening stretch from Justin Williamson. After Badger struck first with a 3-pointer, Williamson answered by fueling a 10-2 Union Grove run, scoring 8 points during that surge to flip the early momentum. Williamson finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists as the teams battled through a back-and-forth first half that stayed within five points either way.

Coach Roettgen-We did a great job handling their pressure all night and attacking the rim. Our free throw shooting in the second half helped us close out the game. We did a great job being in control and getting our spacing right offensively in the second half. It helped relieve some of the pressure they were giving us. I thought we did a great job not settling for shots and getting downhill, especially in the second half. I look forward to our next challenge vs. Elkhorn next Tuesday.

Point guard Caden Tajnai steadied the Broncos throughout, particularly as foul trouble mounted in the first half. With three starters picking up two fouls before halftime, Tajnai kept the offense organized and delivered several timely baskets on his way to a career-high 23 points. He added 7 assists and 6 steals while going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, repeatedly punishing Badger for defensive pressure and late-game fouls.

Union Grove’s depth and toughness were also on display during that foul-trouble stretch. Reserve forward Cade Sherwood injected energy off the bench, diving on the floor for loose balls and setting the tone for what became seven recorded “floor burns” for the Broncos. That hustle carried into the second half, where Union Grove’s defensive intensity helped limit clean looks for Badger and turn stops into transition opportunities.

Tyler Johnson rounded out the Broncos’ quartet of double-figure scorers with 16 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists. Johnson was efficient inside the arc at 6-for-7 on 2-pointers and added 4-for-5 shooting at the line, contributing to a near-perfect team performance at the stripe after the break. Union Grove went 16-for-17 on free throws in the second half, using that precision to maintain a comfortable margin and close out the 90-73 win.

With the victory, Union Grove showed its ability to respond to sustained pressure, manage foul adversity and rely on multiple scoring options. The Broncos’ combination of perimeter playmaking, interior efficiency and defensive hustle provided a blueprint that will be valuable as conference play continues.
