UNION GROVE, Wis. - Union Grove earned a 3-1 home victory over Waterford on Thursday night, prevailing 27-25, 28-30, 25-20, 25-19. The Broncos responded to a grueling second-set setback by taking the final two sets, finishing the match with contributions from across the lineup.
The opening two sets could hardly have been closer. Union Grove secured the first set 27-25 before Waterford answered with a 30-28 win in the second. The teams were even at 55 total points through those two extended sets, leaving the match tied at one set apiece and setting up a pivotal third.
Union Grove found the separation it needed after the break. The Broncos claimed the third set 25-20 to move back in front, then maintained that momentum with a 25-19 victory in the fourth. After splitting the first 110 points evenly, Union Grove outscored Waterford 50-39 over the final two sets to close out the home win.
Outside hitter Mason Knapp led the attack with 14 kills and added two aces from the service line. Setter Asher Gonzales directed the offense with 39 assists, consistently putting the Broncos in position to score. At the net, middle blocker Brayden Lauf recorded five blocks, while libero Cody Borchardt anchored the back row with 27 digs.
Those performances gave Union Grove balance in every phase. Knapp provided finishing power, Gonzales kept the offense moving, Lauf strengthened the front-row defense and Borchardt helped extend rallies with his work on the floor. The Broncos finished with a 105-94 advantage in total points and showed poise by answering Waterford’s second-set push with two decisive set victories.
Union Grove will look to carry that momentum into an away match against Burlington at 6:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday, Sept. 29.
