Broncos Bounce Back to Beat Nicolet in Four Sets

Union Grove turned a narrow opening-set loss into a strong four-set victory Tuesday night, defeating Nicolet 3-1 in Glendale, Wisconsin. The Broncos dropped a tense first set 28-26 before responding with three consecutive wins, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19, to complete an impressive comeback on the road.
The opening set provided the tightest competition of the match. Union Grove pushed Nicolet beyond the standard 25-point finish but came up two points short, falling 28-26. Rather than allowing that result to linger, the Broncos regrouped and established control in the second set. Their balanced attack and defensive pressure produced a 25-18 win that evened the match at one set apiece.
Outside hitter Caden Tajnai powered the Union Grove offense with a team-leading 17 kills. Setter Asher Gonzales kept the attack moving throughout the match and finished with 46 assists, consistently putting the Broncos’ hitters in position to score. Their connection helped Union Grove sustain its momentum after the demanding first set.
The Broncos carried that energy into the third set and earned another 25-18 victory, taking a 2-1 match lead. Middle blocker Brayden Lauf strengthened the effort at the net with four blocks, helping Union Grove slow Nicolet’s attack. Defensive specialist Jason Andrews added another source of pressure from the service line, recording four aces.
Union Grove closed the match with a steady 25-19 win in the fourth set. Libero Cody Borchardt anchored the back row with 18 digs, extending rallies and helping the Broncos turn Nicolet attacks into scoring opportunities. With Tajnai finishing points, Gonzales directing the offense and Borchardt supporting the defense, Union Grove received important contributions across the court.
Winning three straight sets after the opening setback gave the Broncos a complete and encouraging team victory. Union Grove will return home to face Waterford at 6:30 p.m. CDT Thursday, Sept. 24, at Union Grove High School.
