Union Grove’s Broncos women’s basketball team came up on the short end of a defensive struggle Friday night, falling 47-40 at Waterford despite a 20-point performance from guard Camryn Smith and a dominant edge in transition scoring.

Both teams set a defensive tone early, and that pace never really relented. Possessions were deliberate, shot attempts were contested and neither side gave much away with the ball. Union Grove finished with just eight turnovers, while Waterford committed 10, underscoring how much of the outcome hinged on half-court execution rather than mistakes. With points at a premium, each scoring stretch and late stop loomed larger as the game moved into the second half.

Smith provided the offensive spark for the Broncos, pouring in a game-high 20 points to go with two assists and two steals as she attacked the lane and knocked down shots from the perimeter. Her scoring helped Union Grove build a 10-0 advantage in transition points, turning rebounds and defensive stops into quick baskets before Waterford’s defense could get set. Those fast-break opportunities kept the Broncos within striking distance all night.

In the paint, forward Josie Licht anchored Union Grove on the glass, pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. Her work on the boards limited second-chance chances for Waterford and helped trigger the Broncos’ running game. Combined with active perimeter defense from the guard rotation, Union Grove consistently forced tough looks and held Waterford to a modest point total in a game that never opened up offensively.

The difference came after halftime, when Union Grove endured several scoring lulls in the second half. While the Broncos continued to defend at a high level, a few empty trips and missed looks in the half-court allowed Waterford to carve out just enough separation. The hosts capitalized with timely baskets and free throws, gradually nudging the margin to a two- and then three-possession game in the closing minutes.

Even as the offense faltered in stretches, Union Grove’s defensive effort and ball security remained steady, keeping the contest within reach until the final minutes. The Broncos continued to pressure the ball, chased shooters off the arc and limited turnovers, but Waterford answered each late push with a key score to protect its lead and close out the 47-40 result.

Union Grove will look to build on the positives from the performance — including Smith’s scoring outburst, Licht’s rebounding presence and a clear transition edge — as the Broncos turn their attention back to Southern Lakes Conference play. With a stout defensive identity and improved consistency in the half-court offense, the team appears positioned to convert similar close, low-scoring contests into victories as the season progresses.
