Broncos edged 51-46 in back-and-forth battle at Elkhorn

Union Grove’s Broncos women’s basketball team came up just short on the road Saturday night, falling 51-46 at Elkhorn in a game defined by lead changes and a decisive stretch of second-chance points late in the fourth quarter. Despite taking more shots from the field, the Broncos could not overcome Elkhorn’s work on the offensive glass in the final minutes.

The matchup stayed tight from the opening tip, with neither side able to create much separation through the first half. Both teams traded small runs, and the lead shifted multiple times as the Broncos’ perimeter shooting matched Elkhorn’s interior scoring. Union Grove generated quality looks and pushed the tempo enough to attempt eight more shots than Elkhorn overall, but Elkhorn’s ability to extend possessions kept the hosts close and set the stage for the closing stretch.

In the second half, Union Grove continued to rely on its guard play and spacing to create offense. The Broncos’ defense produced turnovers and contested jumpers, helping the team stay within one or two possessions for most of the third and early fourth quarters. However, Elkhorn capitalized on a series of offensive rebounds down the stretch, turning missed shots into putbacks and free throws that ultimately created the narrow 51-46 margin.

Karlie Peterson led the Broncos’ scoring effort with 12 points, providing an efficient spark from beyond the arc. The guard went 4-for-5 from 3-point range and added three assists, repeatedly punishing Elkhorn’s defense when it collapsed into the lane. Peterson’s perimeter shooting helped Union Grove answer several Elkhorn runs and kept the Broncos within striking distance into the closing minutes.

Defensively, Camryn Smith was a key factor, recording five steals to disrupt Elkhorn’s ball movement. Smith’s activity at the top of the defense created transition opportunities and short-circuit offensive sets, contributing to the back-and-forth nature of the contest. Her pressure helped Union Grove generate the extra shot attempts that kept the game close.

Union Grove also received balanced scoring support from its backcourt. Natalie Hammes and Mia Wilks each added 11 points, giving the Broncos multiple threats opponents had to account for on the perimeter and in driving lanes. Their contributions, combined with Peterson’s outside shooting, formed the core of the Broncos’ 46-point effort.

Despite the loss, the performance at Elkhorn highlighted the Broncos’ ability to compete possession by possession in a tight game on the road. With multiple players contributing on both ends of the floor and the team generating more overall attempts from the field, Union Grove has a clear foundation to build on as it moves deeper into the schedule and looks to convert close contests into wins.
