WATERTOWN, Wis. - Union Grove finished 0-5 at the eight-team Watertown Tournament on Saturday, enduring a difficult stretch of five matches while showing flashes of stronger connection as the day progressed. The Broncos faced Janesville Craig, Slinger and De Pere in three consecutive pool-play matches before meeting Hartford and Waterford in bracket play.
The tournament began against Janesville Craig, which challenged Union Grove with steady ball control and smart decision-making. The Broncos struggled to establish consistent back-row control and could not generate enough offense to overcome Craig’s volleyball IQ. Those difficulties prevented Union Grove from settling into a sustained rhythm in the opening match.
Union Grove continued pool play against Slinger and De Pere. The Broncos produced one of their strongest challenges of the day against Slinger, pushing the match to a deciding third set before Slinger reached the finish first. Against De Pere, Union Grove continued to fight through difficult stretches and found moments when its passing, setting and attack connected more effectively.
The Broncos advanced to bracket play looking to turn those encouraging sequences into a complete match. Hartford handed Union Grove a disappointing loss, leaving the Broncos searching for a breakthrough before their final contest against Waterford.
Union Grove responded with a competitive opening set against Waterford. The Broncos kept the match close and forced Waterford to remain sharp throughout the first set, providing a positive stretch despite the eventual loss. The performance showed the level Union Grove could reach when its ball control and offensive timing worked together.
Although the weekend ended without a victory, the Broncos left Watertown with clear areas to address and several competitive moments to build on.
