Broncos Rally in Third Set Before Falling 3-1 to Waterford

Waterford defeated the Union Grove Broncos 3-1 Tuesday night in Union Grove, overcoming the Broncos’ third-set response to close the match in four sets. Union Grove entered the rematch eager to reverse its loss to the Wolverines at the Watertown Invite on Sept. 12, but slow starts in the opening two sets created a difficult deficit.

The Broncos remained composed through those early struggles, even as inconsistent first contact kept them from getting into system. Waterford capitalized at the net, while Union Grove had difficulty creating clean attacking opportunities and putting kills on the floor. The Wolverines took each of the first two sets to build a 2-0 match lead.

Union Grove’s serve receive and back-row defense improved sharply in the third set, giving the offense more options at the net. With cleaner passes reaching the setter, the Broncos were able to run their attack with better rhythm and keep Waterford’s defense under pressure. Kaylin Brown developed a strong connection with the setting throughout the match, helping Union Grove find more productive swings.

Junior setter Paitynn Parades provided the third set’s defining stretch with an extended serving run that energized the Broncos and brought the home crowd to its feet. Union Grove sustained that momentum with consistent defense and captured the set, cutting Waterford’s match lead to 2-1. During that run, the Wolverines struggled to slow the Broncos’ improved offense.

The fourth set developed into a back-and-forth fight as Union Grove tried to force a decisive fifth set. The Broncos continued battling at the net and in serve receive, but Waterford eventually put together the pivotal scoring run. That surge created the separation the Wolverines needed to take the fourth set and complete the 3-1 victory.

Despite the loss, Union Grove’s third-set turnaround showed how effective the team can be when its first contact allows the offense to stay in system. The Broncos will see Waterford again tomorrow night, September 23rd, at the ITA Quad.
