UNION GROVE, Wis. - Union Grove High School erased a three-point halftime deficit with a 27-0 second half to defeat Case 42-18 in flag football Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Racine. The victory closed the Broncos’ season.
Olivia Braun provided an early offensive spark by catching her first touchdown after the ball was tipped. Case led 18-15 at halftime, but the Broncos took over after the break as Lexi Ystenes consistently found receivers and made sharp decisions with her passing options. Ystenes finished with five touchdown passes in a performance that helped Union Grove produce its strongest half of the season.
Maren Brau contributed across the offense, catching two touchdown passes and rushing for more than 50 yards. Leah Johnsen added a touchdown reception and a one-point conversion catch, while Nicole Gutierrez-Lopez scored a rushing touchdown. Union Grove supplemented its six touchdowns with six points on conversions, giving the Broncos production beyond their scoring drives.
The defense matched that offensive surge by holding Case scoreless throughout the second half. Freshman Kallie Whitley and Katelyn Von Bergen led the defensive effort, while Brau added an interception to her two-way performance. Keirhan Peterson also intercepted a pass as Union Grove prevented Case from adding to its halftime total.
The Broncos delivered that defensive finish without Aubrey Ersing, a leading defender who was sidelined by an injury suffered over the weekend at the Bay Port Tournament. Alayah Lightfoot took over at center for Ersing for the first time this season and handled the assignment well. Union Grove also played in support of Adelyn O’Brien, whose season ended because of a concussion, with the team stepping up after halftime for both injured teammates.
Braun, the Broncos’ sole senior and captain, finished with two touchdown catches, a two-point conversion and three one-point conversions for 17 points. The only remaining player from last year’s team, Braun closed her high school flag football career with a victory.
