Union Grove’s season came to a close Saturday night as the Broncos fell 44-35 to Jefferson in a WIAA regional matchup at Union Grove, undone by cold shooting and turnovers against a persistent zone defense.

The Broncos struggled to find rhythm offensively against Jefferson’s zone, finishing at 27 percent from the field and committing 19 turnovers, both season lows for a team that had been consistent throughout the year. Despite the offensive difficulties, Union Grove remained within striking distance into the second half, relying on defensive effort and rebounding to stay in the game before Jefferson pulled away late in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Natalie Hammes led Union Grove with 14 points, going 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-8 from 3-point range while adding four rebounds and four steals. Fellow senior guard Camryn Smith added nine points, eight rebounds and a team-high four steals, battling on both ends to try to spark a comeback. Junior guard Karlie Peterson chipped in five points, including a 3-pointer, as the Broncos tried to shoot Jefferson out of its zone look.

Union Grove generated enough defensive pressure to give itself chances. Smith’s eight rebounds, including one on the offensive glass, helped limit Jefferson to single possessions on several trips, while Hammes and Smith combined for eight steals at the top of the defense. Sophomore guard Ruby Christiansen was active as well, finishing with five rebounds, one block and one steal, and senior guard Mia Wilks contributed an assist without a turnover in her minutes at the point.

Coach Domagalski
These players showed growth this season, and I am very proud of them. They are not just basketball players, but they are awesome people. They are each a great representative of our school and community.

However, the combination of missed shots and giveaways ultimately proved too much to overcome. The Broncos had trouble consistently attacking gaps in Jefferson’s zone and converting open looks on the perimeter. Several promising stretches were cut short by turnovers that turned into transition opportunities for Jefferson, allowing the visitors to maintain control of the scoreboard and manage the tempo in the second half.

Even with the regional loss, the season reflected significant progress for Union Grove. The Broncos finished second in conference play at 10-4 and closed the year with a 17-8 overall record, establishing themselves as one of the league’s most competitive teams. The group’s defensive identity, depth in the backcourt and balanced rebounding helped fuel that success throughout the winter.

Head coach Rob Domagalski expressed pride in how the team developed from the start of the season through the postseason, noting the growth shown by both the senior class and the underclassmen contributors. With a strong returning core and an established standard of effort and preparation, Union Grove expects that, with committed work in the offseason, the Broncos’ recent winning tradition will continue into next year and beyond.
