UNION GROVE, Wis. - State qualifiers Aila Johnson and Parker Newland represented Union Grove High School at the State Championship on Saturday, October 31, in Wisconsin Rapids, with Johnson finishing in 20:53 and Newland clocking 17:16. The Broncos faced strong competition on a challenging cross country course.
Johnson completed at her 1st state appearance against a demanding field, taking on both the course and the runners gathered for the championship. Her finish gave the Broncos one of their two individual results at the meet.
Newland also finished the difficult course, recording his state championship result amid light rain and a temperature of 55 degrees. Winds were listed at 5 mph for the meet, adding weather considerations to a day already defined by the course's difficulty and the quality of the competition.
Beyond their finishing times, the championship gave Johnson and Newland firsthand experience with the course. Both qualifiers have now raced it rather than approaching it as an unfamiliar challenge, giving them a concrete point of reference for another run at it next year. They left the meet with that course experience and readiness to take it on again.
