Meyers' 90-Yard Pick-Six Sparks Union Grove Past Elkhorn, 24-14

Union Grove turned a sudden mistake into the game's decisive momentum swing Friday, Sept. 4, defeating Elkhorn 24-14 on the road in the Southern Lakes Conference opener. Sophomore cornerback Bryce Meyers delivered the pivotal play with a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown, helping the Broncos improve to 3-0.

Meyers' pick-six came immediately after quarterback Quinn Schultz threw his first and only interception of the season. On Elkhorn's next offensive play, Meyers intercepted the Elks' quarterback and raced 90 yards for his first varsity touchdown. The rapid response prevented Elkhorn from capitalizing on the turnover and gave Union Grove a game-changing defensive score.

The Broncos' defense held Elkhorn's difficult Wing-T rushing attack to 14 points. Bennett and JJ Fletcher led that effort with a pair of forceful performances, combining for 30 tackles and 11 assists. Their work helped Union Grove contain an Elkhorn offense that entered the matchup unbeaten and presented a significant early conference test.

Schultz also made an impact with his legs, rushing for 93 yards as Union Grove generated enough offense to create separation. The Broncos complemented that production with Meyers' defensive touchdown and a disciplined effort against the Elks' ground-oriented system, securing a 10-point victory over another team that entered the night 2-0.

The result handed Elkhorn its first loss and dropped the Elks to 2-1. It also continued Union Grove's recent success in the series after the Broncos edged Elkhorn 34-33 in a thriller in 2025. With another victory over the Elks, Union Grove opened conference play with a statement and remained unbeaten through three games in 2026.
