Mukwonago pulls away late to top Union Grove 14-4

Union Grove’s varsity baseball team showed some fight at the plate Saturday, but Mukwonago broke the game open with a big seventh inning and handed the Broncos a 14-4 loss at Indian Trail High School and Academy.

The decisive stretch came in the top of the seventh, when Mukwonago scored six runs on four hits to turn a competitive game into a lopsided final. Reilly delivered a two-run single, Teisl followed with a two-run double, and Dooley added a two-run single as Mukwonago built its cushion. That outburst capped a day in which Mukwonago took advantage of timely hitting and patient at-bats.

Mukwonago grabbed the lead in the first inning when Paczocha doubled home a run, then made it 2-0 in the second on Reilly’s RBI single. The Indians added even more pressure in the third. Andrysczyk singled in a run, Smeiska ripped a two-run double, and Paczocha added another RBI single as Mukwonago extended the advantage early.

For Union Grove, Tucker Katterhagen and Kevin Brau provided a steady spark in the lineup, collecting two hits apiece while batting back-to-back. Jude Rogowski and Schmitz each drove in a run for the Broncos, who finished with seven hits and continued to battle through the middle innings. Even in a tough result, Union Grove had productive moments offensively and found contributions from multiple spots in the order.

On the mound, Evan Northup took the loss for the Broncos after working two innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked four. Christian Kuiper covered three innings in relief and gave up four runs on three hits while walking two. Mukwonago starter Scheel went the distance for the win, allowing four runs, only one of them earned, on seven hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Mukwonago finished with 11 hits and 11 walks, showing depth throughout the order. No. 9 hitter Andrysczyk led the way with three hits in four at-bats, while Dooley went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Reilly and Paczocha also had multiple hits, and Smeiska stole two bases. For Union Grove, the response at the plate from Katterhagen, Brau, Rogowski and Schmitz offered encouraging signs as the Broncos look ahead to the next opportunity on the schedule.
