Union Grove junior Camden Rugg capped a dominant day with a pin in the finals to win his weight class and earn a trip to Madison, leading the Broncos men’s wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the Burlington sectional on Saturday in Burlington, Wisconsin.
Union Grove finished ninth in the 16-team field with 85 points in a deep sectional that was topped by Burlington with 199 points. Milton took second with 174, followed closely by Kenosha Indian Trail at 173, while Oak Creek was fourth with 156. The Broncos outscored seven programs, including Kenosha Bradford (74), Janesville Craig (70) and Elkhorn (63), to close a solid team campaign in one of the state’s tougher postseason brackets.
Rugg, now 48-0 on the season, was flawless through four rounds on his way to the championship at Burlington. After receiving a bye in the championship round of 16, he needed just 30 seconds in the quarterfinals to pin Jack Olson of Oak Creek. In the semifinals, Rugg showcased his technical superiority with a 19-4 technical fall in 2:16 over Burlington’s Campton Naber, punching his ticket to the finals in emphatic fashion.
The title bout proved to be Rugg’s toughest test of the day against Milton freshman Kolten Mueller, who entered with a 42-5 record. Rugg controlled the action and ultimately secured the fall at 4:35 in the first-place match, locking up the sectional championship and officially qualifying for the WIAA State Tournament in Madison. The unbeaten junior’s performance made him one of the most dominant individuals in the bracket and provided the highlight of the Broncos’ sectional run.
Union Grove also received strong efforts from several underclassmen and upperclassmen who battled through a demanding field. Jax Braun turned in one of his best tournaments of the year, advancing deep into the bracket before coming up just short of a state berth. Braun’s run added important team points and demonstrated competitive progress against high-level sectional competition.
Waylon Winter and Braxton Storbeck each contributed podium finishes, placing fifth in their respective weight classes. While fifth does not advance to Madison, the pair’s work kept Union Grove in the middle of the team standings and provided valuable postseason experience. Their efforts, combined with Rugg’s title, helped the Broncos separate from the bottom of the standings and remain competitive in a field that featured multiple top-end team contenders.
With Rugg advancing to the WIAA State Tournament and several wrestlers closing their seasons with strong sectional showings, Union Grove heads into the offseason with momentum. The Broncos will look to build around Rugg’s undefeated campaign and the sectional experience gained by Braun, Winter, Storbeck and the rest of the lineup as the program continues to compete in one of Wisconsin’s most challenging postseason paths.
