Union Grove Boys Varsity used a fast start, relentless defensive pressure and a milestone scoring night from senior guard Griffin Schultz to power past South Milwaukee 79-47 on Monday night in South Milwaukee.

The Broncos seized control immediately with a 7-0 run to open the game, fueled by Tyler Johnson. That early burst set the tone, as Union Grove repeatedly turned defense into offense, forcing turnovers and getting out in transition. By halftime, the Broncos had built a commanding 36-17 lead, capitalizing on their pressure and balanced ball movement.

Schultz provided the night’s defining moment early in the second half. Driving to the basket, he finished a layup that not only extended Union Grove’s lead but also pushed him past the 1,000-point mark for his career with the Broncos. He went on to finish with a game-high 26 points and four rebounds, anchoring the Union Grove offense while adding a historic chapter to the program’s record book.

Johnson delivered an efficient and physical performance in the frontcourt, scoring 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. His early scoring sparked the initial run, and his work on the glass helped limit South Milwaukee to one shot on many possessions. Justin Williamson added nine points, and Kellen Vermeer chipped in seven, giving the Broncos multiple threats the opponent struggled to contain.

Coach Roettgen-It was a big night out there for our team! We attacked the hoop well, shared the ball, Griffin got his 1,000th career point and we capped it off with a win. We've won 8 of 11 games to get back to .500 after our tough start. I'm so proud of our team and our resilience and fight we have shown over the course of the year. I look forward to our next matchup vs. Beloit Memorial Friday.

After Union Grove’s dominant first half, the second half played more evenly until the closing stretch. With about six minutes remaining, the Broncos put the game away with a decisive 14-0 run over a span of roughly three and a half minutes. That surge slammed the door on any potential comeback and pushed the margin to its final 79-47 tally.

Ball movement was a hallmark of the Broncos’ offense throughout the night. Union Grove finished with eight players recording at least two assists, reflecting the team’s willingness to share the ball and find the open man. That unselfish approach, combined with aggressive defense and timely scoring from Schultz and Johnson, allowed the Broncos to control the game from start to finish.

With the win and Schultz’s 1,000-point milestone, Union Grove added both a convincing result and a significant individual achievement to its season, reinforcing the Broncos’ confidence heading into the heart of their schedule.
