Schultz’s 29, late defensive stand lift Union Grove over The Prairie School, 67-61

Union Grove High School closed out a tight road matchup at The Prairie School with composure on both ends of the floor Saturday night, riding a standout offensive performance from Griffin Schultz and a late defensive stand to a 67-61 victory.

The Broncos had to recover quickly after falling behind 6-0 in the opening minutes. Union Grove answered with an 11-0 run to flip control of the game, settling in offensively by moving the ball, trusting teammates and generating clean looks from the perimeter and at the rim. That surge helped the Broncos build a 35-27 advantage by halftime, setting the tone for a night defined by unselfish offense and persistent effort on the glass.

Union Grove’s willingness to work for extra opportunities was evident on a key first-half possession when the Broncos secured four offensive rebounds before finally converting the basket. During a key timeout at that point, the Broncos emphasized a simple message: get stops, and the game is theirs.

Union Grove delivered on that talk in the closing minutes. The Broncos tightened their defense, protected the ball and continued to generate quality looks without forcing shots. They held The Prairie School scoreless the rest of the way while knocking down crucial free throws and late attempts to close out the 67-61 win, turning what had become a one-possession game into a statement about late-game execution.

Schultz led all scorers with 29 points, hitting timely shots from beyond the arc by going 6-for-11 on 3-pointers. He added three rebounds, four assists and four steals, impacting the game on both ends. Johnson’s double-double gave Union Grove a reliable interior option and steady rebounding, while Quinn Schultz helped orchestrate the offense with five assists. Defensively, Caden Tajnai provided a momentum play by stepping in to draw a charge, underscoring the Broncos’ commitment to making effort plays that do not always show up in the box score.
