Second-Half Surge Not Enough as Union Grove Falls to Burlington, 73-63

Union Grove High School put together a dominant second-half run but could not close out a late lead, falling 73-63 to Burlington on Friday night on the road.
After a tightly contested first half, Burlington carried a 7-point advantage into the break and appeared in control early in the second half. Union Grove trailed 39-33 when the Broncos flipped the momentum, ripping off a 26-10 surge over the next seven minutes to seize a 10-point lead. That stretch showcased the team’s resilience and energy out of the locker room, as Union Grove attacked the paint, defended aggressively and pushed the pace in transition.
Burlington, however, answered down the stretch. Following the Broncos’ run, Union Grove committed some costly turnovers and missed key opportunities at the rim, allowing Burlington to chip away at the margin. The Broncos went through a difficult stretch defensively late, struggling to secure stops as Burlington methodically closed the gap and eventually pulled even.
The decisive sequence came in the final minutes. With the game tied and Union Grove searching for a late response, Burlington knocked down a 3-pointer with three minutes remaining to take the lead for good. From there, the Broncos were unable to regain control.
Union Grove’s offense was led by a standout performance from Griffin Schultz, who finished with a game-high 26 points and added 5 rebounds. Tyler Johnson provided a strong interior presence with 21 points and 9 rebounds, giving the Broncos a consistent scoring option and help on the glass. Quinn Schultz added 8 points and 5 rebounds, contributing on both ends during the pivotal second-half run.
The Broncos’ surge after halftime underscored their ability to respond when facing adversity, but the closing minutes highlighted areas for growth in protecting leads and executing late-game possessions. Improved decision-making with the ball and more consistent defensive stops in crunch time will be key points of emphasis moving forward.
Union Grove will look to apply those lessons quickly with its next challenge set for Monday against Kenosha Bradford.
