Smith’s 29, second-half defensive switch power Broncos past Burlington 64-41

BURLINGTON, Wis. — Camryn Smith poured in 29 points and Union Grove’s defensive adjustment after halftime sparked a dominant second half, lifting the Broncos women’s basketball team to a 64-41 road win over Burlington on Wednesday night.
The matchup stayed tight through the first two quarters as Burlington matched Union Grove’s pace and shot-making. The Demons consistently found gaps against the Broncos’ man-to-man defense, keeping the margin within single digits and preventing Union Grove from creating separation before the break.
That changed in the second half when the Broncos switched from straight man-to-man to a 1-3-1 look, a move that flipped the game’s momentum. The longer, more active zone disrupted Burlington’s ball movement and passing angles, forcing the Demons into rushed decisions and contested shots. Burlington managed just 14 points after halftime as Union Grove’s length at the top and on the wings took away driving lanes and corner looks.
With stops coming more consistently, the Broncos were able to control the tempo on offense. Smith continued to lead the way, attacking in transition and capitalizing on Burlington turnovers to finish at the rim and draw fouls. Her 29-point performance set the tone for an offense that steadily pulled away as the third and fourth quarters progressed.
Union Grove’s guards also helped stabilize the game’s pace, valuing possessions and limiting mistakes against Burlington’s pressure. The Broncos used patient half-court sets when needed and pushed the ball opportunistically off rebounds and steals, gradually stretching the lead into double digits and then out of reach.
By the final minutes, Union Grove’s combination of defensive intensity and efficient scoring had fully taken control. The Broncos’ ability to adjust schemes at halftime and execute that change on the floor turned a close contest into a convincing 64-41 victory, providing a strong conference road win and a blueprint built on disciplined defense and a standout scoring effort from Smith.
