Lake Geneva, Wis. — Camryn Smith delivered a record-setting performance Tuesday night, pouring in 39 points to lead the Union Grove Broncos women’s basketball team to a 73-68 road win over Lake Geneva Badger after withstanding a late comeback.
Union Grove built a 15-point cushion in the second half behind efficient offense and timely rebounding before Badger mounted a charge from the perimeter. Badger heated up from beyond the arc, connecting on multiple 3-pointers while forcing turnovers that trimmed the Broncos’ lead to single digits in the fourth quarter. Each Badger basket tightened the margin, but Union Grove responded enough times to keep control down the stretch.
Smith was the constant throughout, scoring in all four quarters and controlling the pace of the Broncos’ attack. The guard’s 39 points set a new single-game scoring record for Union Grove High School, and she complemented her scoring with three assists and eight rebounds. Her ability to score within the flow of the offense — in transition, off the dribble and at the free-throw line — prevented Badger from completely erasing the deficit once the hosts seized momentum.
Union Grove’s early defensive effort helped create the separation it needed. The Broncos turned stops into points, pushing the ball after rebounds and turnovers to build their double-digit lead coming out of halftime. As Badger adjusted and applied more pressure, Union Grove relied on Smith’s poise to break traps and create clean looks, either for herself or teammates.
Forward Josie Licht anchored the Broncos on the glass, finishing with eight rebounds and helping Union Grove limit Badger to one shot on several key late-game possessions. Combined with Smith’s eight boards, the Broncos held up inside during Badger’s perimeter flurry, securing critical defensive rebounds in the final minutes to close out the win.
With the 73-68 victory, Union Grove added a quality nonconference road win to its résumé and gained valuable experience in protecting a lead against a late surge. The Broncos will look to build on Smith’s record night and the team’s composure in pressure moments as they continue through the heart of their schedule.
