Union Grove High School’s boys varsity basketball team hung tough through the first half before Beloit Memorial used a decisive second-half surge to pull away for an 86-52 win Friday night at Beloit Memorial High School.
The game opened with back-and-forth play, as the Broncos slowed the pace and worked to stay in control against Beloit’s fast-paced tempo. Despite Beloit’s aggressive defense, Union Grove generated quality looks in the half court but struggled to convert consistently. Beloit gradually built a lead and took control late in the first half, heading into the locker room with a 38-25 advantage at halftime.
Union Grove responded out of the break, putting together one of its strongest stretches of the night. Behind improved execution and work on the glass, the Broncos trimmed the deficit to 49-39 with about 12 minutes remaining, forcing Beloit to regroup. That run showcased the team’s resilience as Union Grove continued to attack against Beloit’s relentless pressure and refused to let the game get out of hand early.
From there, however, Beloit delivered the game’s turning point. The Knights answered Union Grove’s push with a 25-4 run that effectively decided the outcome, turning a 10-point game into a lopsided margin. During that stretch, a series of turnovers and missed layups by the Broncos led directly to transition opportunities the other way. Even when Union Grove earned initial stops on defense, Beloit frequently capitalized on second-chance opportunitie as the Broncos struggled to secure key rebounds and push the ball up the floor.
Despite the final score, Union Grove received strong individual efforts. Tyler Johnson led the Broncos with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists, providing production across the stat sheet. Griffin Schultz added nine points, giving Union Grove another offensive option on the perimeter. Justin Williamson contributed eight points and five rebounds while turning in an important defensive performance against a Beloit offense featuring a standout scorer averaging 36.6 points per game.
Defensively, Union Grove also relied on Quinn Schultz, who, along with Williamson, was tasked with slowing Beloit’s high-powered leading scorer. Their work helped make the Knights’ points come with more difficulty in the half court, even as Beloit’s pressure continued to disrupt the Broncos’ rhythm. Coaches noted the collective defensive effort and the way Union Grove competed on that end despite the Knights’ extended scoring runs.
The 34-point margin did not reflect the competitiveness on display for much of the night. Union Grove’s ability to battle early, respond out of halftime, and compete possession by possession against sustained pressure provided key takeaways as the team looks ahead on the schedule.
