Union Grove High School’s boys varsity basketball team rode a fast start but ultimately could not withstand Waterford’s second-half surge in a 58-39 loss Friday at Union Grove High School. The Broncos built an early double-digit lead and stayed within striking distance late into the second half before a decisive Waterford run put the game out of reach.
Union Grove opened the game in control, using a balanced attack to grab a 15-3 advantage just four minutes into the first half. Five different Broncos scored those first 15 points, spreading the floor and keeping Waterford off-balance defensively. That early stretch set the tone for how Union Grove wanted to play, with multiple players touching the ball and contributing on the offensive end.
Waterford, however, responded with a rally that shifted the momentum. The visitors chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled even at 20-20 with 7:21 remaining in the first half. Turnovers began to hurt Union Grove at that point, leading to several transition opportunities for Waterford. Those miscues contributed to a 33-24 deficit for the Broncos by the time the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.
The second half opened with both teams trading baskets in a back-and-forth stretch. Union Grove trimmed the margin to 35-28 with 14:30 left, staying within single digits and continuing to fight defensively. But Waterford then put together the game’s decisive push, stringing together a 10-0 run to seize command and open up a 45-28 advantage. That burst created a cushion Union Grove could not fully overcome.
Even facing a sizable deficit, the Broncos continued to battle. Union Grove worked the margin back down to 10 points at 47-37 with 5:47 remaining, showing resilience on both ends of the floor. Union Grove’s defense generated a few key stops, and the offense found enough rhythm to make one last push. However, Waterford answered down the stretch and closed the game on an 11-2 run to secure the 58-39 final.
Offensively, Union Grove was led by Kellen Vermeer, who finished with 12 points, six rebounds and drew a charge, providing energy on both ends of the court. Quinn Schultz did a good job leading the defensive attack on their leading scorer. Tyler Johnson added a near double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, helping the Broncos compete on the glass. Griffin Schultz contributed eight rebounds and three assists, facilitating ball movement and extending possessions for Union Grove.
Despite the loss, the Broncos showed they can build leads against quality opposition with a balanced offensive approach and strong work on the boards. Limiting turnovers and sustaining that early level of execution for 36 minutes will be key as Union Grove moves deeper into the season. The performance of players like Vermeer, Johnson and Schultz offers a strong foundation for the Broncos as they look to turn competitive stretches into complete games.
