UNION GROVE, Wis. - Union Grove picked up victories at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles but fell 5-2 to Elkhorn in a girls tennis conference dual Thursday, Aug. 27. The home match began under clear skies with the temperature at 76 degrees.
Ada Santarelli and Lila Elsbernd delivered the Broncos’ most dramatic victory at No. 2 doubles. After dropping the opening set 6-4, the pair responded in a tightly contested second set and prevailed 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-5. Santarelli and Elsbernd then carried that momentum into the deciding match tiebreaker, earning a 10-5 victory to complete the comeback.
Emma Santarelli supplied Union Grove’s other team point with a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles. She worked through a competitive opening set to win 6-4, then took command in the second set for a 6-1 victory. Her performance gave the Broncos one singles win to go with the team’s doubles triumph.
Elkhorn captured the remaining five courts to secure the conference dual. Union Grove’s two points were split between singles and doubles, with Emma Santarelli taking care of her match in two sets and the No. 2 doubles team extending its match to a decisive tiebreaker after the teams divided the first two sets.
The result moved Union Grove’s season record to 11-3. The Broncos left the dual with two notable performances, including Emma Santarelli’s decisive second set and the resilient rally by Ada Santarelli and Elsbernd after they faced a one-set deficit.
