Union Grove Extends Match With Third-Set Win but Falls to Wilmot in Four Sets

Union Grove, Wis. - Union Grove High School pushed Wilmot to four sets but fell 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 3. The Broncos dropped the opening two sets 25-17 and 25-19 before extending the match with a 26-24 victory in the third. Wilmot closed out the match by taking the fourth set 25-21.
Union Grove faced an early deficit after Wilmot secured the first set by eight points. The Broncos narrowed the margin in the second, but Wilmot finished that set with a six-point advantage to take a 2-0 lead. Despite the difficult start, Union Grove continued to generate offense behind setter Asher Gonzales, who finished with 35 assists while directing the Broncos’ attack.
The Broncos produced their best response in the third set. With neither side able to pull away, Union Grove stayed composed through the late points and earned the 26-24 decision. Outside hitter Caden Tajnai led the attack with 12 kills, providing a dependable option as the Broncos forced Wilmot beyond the usual 25-point finish and kept the match alive.
Union Grove also received contributions across the rotation. Outside hitter Mason Knapp recorded two aces, giving the Broncos points from the service line. Middle blocker Liam Abbott finished with three blocks at the net, while libero Brady Peterson anchored the back row with 22 digs. Those defensive efforts helped Union Grove contest extended rallies and turn Wilmot attacks into transition opportunities.
The fourth set remained competitive, but Wilmot created enough separation to finish the match with a 25-21 victory. Union Grove’s third-set win and balanced production offered positives after the opening two frames, with kills, blocks, aces and back-row defense all contributing to the Broncos’ effort. Wilmot’s ability to finish three sets proved decisive in the 3-1 result.
