Union Grove Packs Six Varsity Finishers Within Strong Time Groups at Midwest Invite

Union Grove produced a balanced varsity showing at the Midwest Invite on Saturday, with Parker Newland leading the boys in 17 minutes, 25 seconds and Aila Johnson pacing the girls in 20:13. The Broncos placed three boys under 18 minutes and had their first three girls finish within 51 seconds of one another, giving both lineups tight groups at the front.

Newland set the pace for the boys, while Xander Stulo and Ethan Ross followed with personal-record performances. Stulo finished in 17:49, and Ross crossed six seconds later in 17:55. The 30-second spread among Union Grove’s top three reflected effective pack running, with Stulo and Ross staying close behind Newland and completing the Broncos’ sub-18-minute trio.

The girls used a similar approach. Johnson led Union Grove in 20:13, followed by Emma Schafer in 20:41 and Mila Johnson in 21:04. Schafer finished 28 seconds behind Johnson, and Mila Johnson kept the group compact by coming through 23 seconds after Schafer. That spacing gave the Broncos three steady performances near the front of their team lineup.

Clear skies and a temperature of 54 degrees greeted the runners for the 9 a.m. start. The favorable conditions helped produce personal bests for Stulo and Ross during an already busy homecoming week at Union Grove. Their breakthroughs were the most significant individual gains of the meet and added depth behind Newland’s team-leading effort.

With three tightly grouped finishers in each varsity race, Union Grove came away from the Midwest Invite with encouraging evidence of its pack strength. Newland and Aila Johnson established the pace for their respective teams, while the close support behind them, including two boys’ personal records, provided a productive finish to a full week for the Broncos.
