Union Grove rallies late, holds off Indian Trail for 7-5 baseball win

Union Grove broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning, then survived a late push from Indian Trail for a 7-5 varsity baseball victory Saturday in Kenosha.

The decisive stretch came in the top of the sixth, when the Broncos finally solved Indian Trail starter Bentz. Kevin Brau started the surge with a solo home run to left field, giving Union Grove its first run of the day. Later in the inning, Dominic Pascucci delivered the biggest hit of the game, a single that brought home three runs. Cooper Dye added another run with a groundout as the Broncos suddenly built a 5-0 lead.

Union Grove added to that cushion and carried a seven-run advantage into the bottom of the seventh before Indian Trail made things tense. The Hawks scored five runs on four hits in their final at-bat, cutting into the margin with an RBI single from Ade and a run-scoring double from Johnson. Johnson and Ade, batting back-to-back in the lineup, each drove in two runs and helped fuel the late comeback attempt.

The Broncos had controlled the game on the mound for most of the afternoon. Jayden King started and threw four scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out five and walking one. Jude Rogowski earned the win in relief after working two scoreless innings. He gave up no hits, struck out one and walked two. Brau, after supplying the go-ahead home run, also collected the save as Union Grove closed out the win.

At the plate, Tucker Katterhagen led Union Grove by going 3-for-4. Pascucci, Brau and Luke Drummond each drove in a run, with Pascucci's bases-clearing hit standing as the game's biggest offensive moment. Bentz took the loss for Indian Trail after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, with one strikeout and four walks.

Indian Trail got one hit apiece from Zeller, Johnson, Schoenfeld and Ade, but Union Grove's pitching kept the Hawks quiet until the final inning. On a clear, breezy evening at Indian Trail, the Broncos did enough in one explosive inning to leave with a 7-5 win.
