RACINE, Wis. - Union Grove High School shook off an opening-set loss and powered through the next three sets to earn a 3-1 victory over Horlick/Park United on Monday, Aug. 31. The Broncos won 19-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-16, turning the match with stronger serving, steady defense and a balanced attack.
Horlick/Park United claimed the first set 25-19, putting Union Grove in an early hole. The Broncos responded immediately, building momentum behind a more effective offense and taking the second set 25-16. Setter Asher Gonzales directed that turnaround and kept Union Grove's hitters involved throughout the match, finishing with 41 assists.
Union Grove carried its improved play into the third set. Outside hitter Mason Knapp delivered a standout attacking performance with 13 kills, giving the Broncos an important option at the net. Middle blocker Liam Abbott strengthened the front-row effort with four blocks as Union Grove won the set 25-18 and moved within one set of the victory.
Cody Borchardt made an impact in multiple phases. The libero collected 25 digs to help the Broncos extend rallies and added seven aces, applying pressure from the service line. That combination of serving and floor defense helped Union Grove control key stretches after the opening set and limited Horlick/Park United's chances to regain momentum.
The Broncos closed the match with another decisive 25-16 set. Gonzales continued to distribute the ball, Mason Knapp supplied finishing power, Abbott provided a blocking presence and Borchardt anchored the back row. After dropping the opener, Union Grove answered by outscoring Horlick/Park United 75-50 across the final three sets, a determined response that secured an encouraging early-season road win for the Broncos.
