Union Grove’s second half comeback bid came up just short Friday night, as the Broncos fell 50-48 to Wilmot in a tightly contested boys basketball matchup at Union Grove.

Offense was hard to come by early for Union Grove, which trailed 22-18 at halftime after struggling to convert open looks from the perimeter and at the rim. Despite the shooting woes, the Broncos stayed within striking distance by leaning on their defense and overall intensity, limiting Wilmot’s clean opportunities and keeping the game within two possessions at the break.

Wilmot created its largest separation in the second half, pushing the margin to 41-31 with 9:46 remaining. That double-digit deficit sparked Union Grove’s best stretch of the night. The Broncos attacked the basket more aggressively, igniting an 8-0 run over the next 2:30 to trim the gap to 41-39 and swing the momentum back in their favor.

Union Grove eventually broke through when Griffin Schultz scored to give the Broncos a one-point lead with 2:30 left. Wilmot answered with one of its few offensive rebounds of the game, converting the second-chance opportunity to reclaim a 47-46 edge. After Union Grove was forced to foul, Wilmot pushed the lead to three, but the Broncos responded with a layup to cut the deficit to 49-48 with 50 seconds remaining.

The Broncos had a final chance after getting the ball back down one with 8 seconds to play. Union Grove ran an out-of-bounds set and created an opportunity near the basket, but the pass could not be completed, leading to a foul with 1.5 seconds left. Wilmot made one free throw to extend the lead to 50-48, and a full-court heave from the Broncos at the buzzer fell short.

Despite the loss, Union Grove received standout efforts from several key players. Griffin Schultz powered the offense with a game-high 28 points and added 10 rebounds, providing consistent production throughout the night and fueling the late rally. Tyler Johnson gave the Broncos a strong interior presence with 10 points and 13 rebounds, controlling the glass for long stretches. Quinn Schultz contributed across the board with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, helping facilitate the offense on a night when baskets were hard to come by.

Union Grove finished with 48 points in a game defined by defense and missed opportunities on the offensive end, including open 3-pointers, transition layups and shots at the rim. Even so, the Broncos’ second-half surge and resilience after falling behind by 10 in the closing minutes underscored the team’s competitiveness as it looks to turn narrow defeats into late-game wins down the stretch of the season.
