Union Grove’s second-half surges fall short in 64-58 regional playoff loss at Burlington

Union Grove mounted multiple comebacks but ultimately came up short falling 64-58 to Burlington in a physical regional playoff matchup Tuesday night on the road.
The Broncos struggled out of the gate, trailing 23-10 with 7:09 left in the first half as Burlington controlled the early tempo. From there, Union Grove found its footing on both ends of the floor, closing the half on an 11-2 run to make it 25-21 at the break. Tyler Johnson powered that surge, scoring 9 of the Broncos’ 11 points during the stretch as Union Grove shifted the momentum and turned a double-digit deficit into a tight game at halftime.
Union Grove carried that push into the second half, taking its first lead of the night in the opening minutes after the break. The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of the half in a sequence that underscored the game’s intensity and physicality. Each time the Broncos grabbed the lead—three separate occasions in the second half—Burlington responded with answers at the other end, preventing Union Grove from stringing together the key defensive stops needed to build separation.
With the game tied at 37, Burlington seized control again with a decisive 9-0 run, pushing Union Grove back into chase mode. The Broncos continued to battle, but Burlington maintained just enough cushion to keep the edge. When Burlington extended its advantage to 53-42 with nine minutes remaining, Union Grove responded with another surge, using an 11-4 run to trim the margin to four points with around four minutes to play.
During that final push, Union Grove received timely scoring from multiple contributors. Johnson continued to attack, while Griffin Schultz and Quinn Schultz helped fuel the comeback effort, and Justin Williamson added key baskets as the Broncos clawed back into contention. The closing minutes turned into a back-and-forth exchange, but Burlington protected the lead and used late possessions to bleed clock, leaving Union Grove just a couple of plays short in its final comeback attempt.
Johnson led the Broncos with 18 points and 7 rebounds, setting the tone during Union Grove’s first-half recovery. Griffin Schultz added 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, providing both scoring and playmaking in the second-half surges. Quinn Schultz finished with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, impacting the game on the glass and as a facilitator. Despite the loss, Union Grove’s resilience, multiple double-digit comebacks and contributions across the lineup highlighted a hard-fought postseason performance in a hostile road environment.
