ELKHORN, WI 53121 - Union Grove found its rhythm after a difficult opening set but could not extend the match Wednesday, falling 0-3 to Elkhorn in girls volleyball. The Elks won 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 in the Sept. 9 match.
Elkhorn established the early advantage with a 5-0 run to begin the first set. The Broncos struggled to settle into a rhythm against that initial pressure, and the opening set remained an uphill battle. Union Grove continued working to create opportunities at the net, but Elkhorn maintained its separation and closed out the set 25-16.
The Broncos were sharper in the second set. Their serve receive remained consistent and allowed the offense to develop strong plays at the net. Senior outside hitter, Alaina Pitts, repeatedly found openings to attack and delivered a series of kills. Elkhorn countered with two extended runs, however, and Union Grove had difficulty ending those rotations and regaining possession. The Broncos stayed within reach before the Elks finished the 25-22 win.
Union Grove produced its best stretch in the third set, combining steady passing with aggressive net play to build a 15-10 lead. Elkhorn's size presented a challenge through tall, solid blocks, but the Broncos responded well by recycling blocked attacks, keeping rallies alive and creating additional chances to score.
That composure kept Union Grove in front during the middle of the set and helped produce a tight finish. The Elks eventually erased the five-point deficit, and two difficult late points went against the Broncos as Elkhorn secured another 25-22 victory to complete the sweep.
Although the result went to Elkhorn, Union Grove's progression across the three sets provided positives to build on. The Broncos improved from the slow opening, received consistent passing and showed in the third set that they could adjust against a strong block while continuing to score at the net.
