Union Grove went 3-0 and captured first place at the ITA Quad on Wednesday in Kenosha, defeating ITA in three sets, Case in three sets and Waterford in two. The Broncos beat ITA 25-23, 22-25, 15-11; rallied past Case 20-25, 25-22, 15-7; and completed the sweep against Waterford 25-21, 25-22.
The finish marked an encouraging response after Union Grove battled through several difficult results during the previous two weeks of tournament play. The Broncos arrived facing another demanding night with three matches on the schedule, but played with resilience and developed a rhythm that carried through the quad.
Union Grove faced adversity immediately against ITA. After taking the opening set, the Broncos dropped the second 25-22 and were pushed into a deciding race to 15. They responded by finding their connections at the net and closing out a 15-11 victory. Case then took the first set of the second match, but Union Grove answered with a 25-22 win before controlling the deciding set 15-7.
The Broncos carried that momentum into their final match. Consistent serve receive from the back row helped keep the offense in system, while the front row supplied steady blocking and improved setter-hitter connections. Union Grove secured first place by holding off Waterford in two competitive sets, winning 25-21 and 25-22.
Nahla Gabbey showed significant improvement in guiding attackers toward the net when the setter was pulled off the net, helping Union Grove remain aggressive in difficult situations. Middle hitters Kaylin Brown and Talia Ritter also established strong connections in both the attack and the blocking game. Their work at the net reflected a broader team effort as the Broncos played together and showed how much they wanted to earn the three victories.
Areas that had challenged Union Grove in recent tournament matches produced much better results Wednesday, particularly the blocking, serve receive and offensive connections. Coach Schouten and Coach Lopp were proud of how the players responded to the recent setbacks and showed up for one another.
