Westosha Central blanks Union Grove 4-0 behind Smet-Cooper
Westosha Central broke a scoreless game in the third inning and went on to defeat Union Grove 4-0 in a Southern Lakes Conference matchup Thursday at Union Grove High School.
The decisive swing came in the top of the third, when Jack Bline singled home the game’s first run. Westosha Central added on from there and backed the early advantage with a clean defensive performance and strong work on the mound.
Union Grove got a steady outing from starter Evan Northup, who worked all seven innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Northup struck out seven and walked one, keeping the Broncos within reach for much of the afternoon despite taking the loss.
The Broncos showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks in the game. Drew Dinauer led that effort with two walks, while Domnick Pina, Griffin Williams and Quinton Schmitz each recorded a hit. Union Grove, though, could not string together the timely hit it needed against Ben Smet-Cooper and the Westosha Central staff.
Smet-Cooper earned the win after holding Union Grove scoreless over six innings. He allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked five. Jack Erber closed it out for the save. At the plate, Bline and Parker Haubrich collected two hits apiece for Westosha Central, and Bline and Smet-Cooper each drove in a run. Westosha Central also played error-free baseball, with Bline leading the way defensively with 10 plays.
Union Grove will look to bounce back at home against Slinger on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 12:00 PM CDT.
