Broncos Make History With 27-17 Win Over Wilmot
WILMOT, Wis. - Union Grove made history with a winning start Friday, Sept. 18, defeating Wilmot 27-17 in the Broncos’ first flag football game in the Southern Lakes Conference. A defense that produced three interceptions helped seal the milestone victory after Union Grove responded to Wilmot’s pressure and regained its early momentum.
The Broncos raced out to a 12-0 lead behind an offense directed by quarterback Lexi Ystenes. Ystenes delivered an exceptional performance at the position, guiding a balanced group that featured touchdowns from running back Maren Brau, wide receiver Keirhan Peterson and center Aubrey Ersing. Olivia Braun contributed at wide receiver and safety, giving Union Grove another versatile presence on both sides of the ball.
Wilmot found a response after Union Grove’s strong opening and made a significant stop that put pressure on the Broncos. Union Grove stayed composed, bounced back and continued to make the plays needed to protect its advantage. The Broncos finished with three touchdowns and complemented that production with timely conversions to reach 27 points.
One of the biggest defensive moments came late in the first half. Brau broke into the backfield and pulled the flag from Wilmot’s running back behind the line of scrimmage, delivering a drive-changing stop. Brau and Katelyn Von Bergen also consistently pressured the Wilmot quarterback with an effective rush, disrupting the offense and creating opportunities for the secondary.
Braun, Adelyn O’Brien and Ersing each intercepted a pass, giving the Broncos three takeaways and highlighting a complete defensive effort. Ersing’s interception added to an impressive two-way performance that also included a touchdown, while Brau’s work as a running back and rusher made an impact throughout the game. Peterson provided another scoring threat at wide receiver.
The victory gave Union Grove a memorable first chapter in Southern Lakes Conference flag football and plenty of momentum to carry forward. The Broncos will next host Westosha Central High School on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, at 4 p.m. CDT, returning home with a historic opening win already secured.
