Second-Half Rally Falls Short as Tigers Drop 80-72 Decision to Oakwood

DENMARK, S.C. — Tigers Men’s Basketball erased a double-digit deficit and briefly took the lead in the second half, but Oakwood (Ala.) closed strong behind a late layup from Joshua Barnett and steady free-throw shooting to hand Voorhees University an 80-72 loss Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium.
Oakwood led 40-29 at halftime after controlling much of the first 20 minutes, but the Tigers turned the game after the break with pressure defense and timely scoring. Voorhees outscored Oakwood 43-40 in the second half and pulled in front multiple times, only to see Oakwood answer at the foul line and in the paint in the closing minutes. Barnett, who finished with a game-high 23 points, drove for a layup with 31 seconds remaining to push the lead into double digits and effectively seal the outcome.
Trailing by 11 at the half, the Tigers opened the second half with renewed energy. Daethan Harris scored early on a layup to trim the margin, and Voorhees continued to chip away behind its defense, which forced 22 Oakwood turnovers and produced 12 steals on the night. The momentum swung at the 17:43 mark, when guard Gary Davis Jr. buried a 3-pointer to cap a Tigers surge and give Voorhees its first lead since the opening minutes, 42-40.
The teams traded blows from there. Midway through the second half, Jermarquis Johnson knocked down a jumper to put the Tigers back on top 52-51, highlighting a stretch in which Voorhees dictated tempo and turned miscues into points. Harris was a catalyst defensively, collecting five steals, while the Tigers battled on the glass to stay within reach against an Oakwood squad that finished with a 44-29 rebounding advantage.
Oakwood, however, responded each time the Tigers threatened. The visitors shot 45.3% from the field and 35.3% from behind the arc, using timely 3-pointers to build their early cushion and then relying on free throws to close it out. Oakwood went 26-of-40 at the line, including an 11-of-13 performance from Barnett, whose scoring and eight rebounds anchored the Oakwood attack. Forward Jordan Bell added 13 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals to help control the interior.
Voorhees finished 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the floor and 3-of-11 from 3-point range. The Tigers’ offensive effort was led by Davis Jr., who scored a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and three assists while hitting 5-of-6 at the foul line and his lone 3-point attempt. Xavier Finney added 11 points, including an early 3-pointer that helped the Tigers jump out to a 4-0 lead and a layup just before halftime to cut into the deficit. Harris chipped in 10 points and two rebounds to go with his five steals in 20 high-energy minutes.
Despite the loss, the Tigers showed resilience in battling back from a double-digit halftime hole and generating multiple second-half leads against an efficient Oakwood offense. Voorhees will look to build on the defensive pressure and second-half execution displayed Saturday as the Tigers continue conference play in the weeks ahead.
