Waldport Faces Lowell With First Place in Special District 3 at Stake
Waldport High School (5-2) hosts Lowell (7-0) on Friday, Oct. 23, with possession of first place in the 2A Special District 3 League on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PDT.
The Red Devils enter ranked first in the district, one spot ahead of the Fightin’ Irish, and both teams remain unbeaten in league play. Lowell also brings an undefeated overall record into the matchup, giving Waldport a chance to hand the district leader its first loss while moving ahead in the standings.
Quarterback Jake Carlson and running back Daniel Segaline are the offensive players to watch for the Irish. Their matchup with a Lowell defense that includes linebacker Thurman will be central to Waldport’s ability to sustain possessions. The balance between Carlson directing the offense and Segaline’s work in the running game presents a key decision for the Red Devils: how to account for both without leaving room for either.
Segaline also plays defensive end, putting him in the spotlight on both sides of the ball. Linebacker Conner Paden joins him among Waldport’s key defensive players against an offense featuring quarterback McNamee, running back Thurman and wide receiver Ewan. The Irish must account for Thurman on the ground while remaining alert to the McNamee-Ewan passing matchup. How Waldport handles those responsibilities will be a central storyline in the meeting of the district’s top two teams.
