Wiley Looks to Snap Skid in Road Test at Red-Hot Tougaloo
Wiley University men's basketball will get another shot at one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference’s (HBCUAC) hottest teams when the Wildcats visit Tougaloo College to begin the second half of conference play at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kroger Gymnasium.
The matchup pairs a Wiley squad trying to climb back into the HBCUAC West Division race against the Bulldogs, who are surging and sitting on top of the division standings. Tougaloo controlled the first meeting 63-54 on Nov. 22 at Alumni Gymnasium. It controlled the glass and forced more turnovers, outscoring the Wildcats
Wiley (1-13, 0-6 HBCUAC) is still searching for its first victory since Oct. 25 and its first road win since Feb. 13. The Wildcats have dropped eight straight away from home, but recent performances have shown signs of offensive improvement.
Tougaloo (9-6, 6-1 HBCUAC) is riding an eight-game winning streak. The Bulldogs’ last four wins have come by at least 15 points, including a statement victory Thursday over league-leading Philander Smith University that handed the Panthers their first conference loss.
For Wiley, the backcourt will be critical in slowing Tougaloo’s momentum. Guard Shamir Mosley continues to be a primary scoring option, coming off his fourth game this season with at least 20 points after finishing with 23 against Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday. Fellow guard Donavan Seamster is also trending upward, delivering his most productive outing of the year with 19 points in that same contest.
Tougaloo is led by forward Antonio Patterson, who ranks third in the conference at 20 points per game. Patterson was relatively contained by Wiley standards in the first meeting yet still totaled 13 points and five rebounds. Guard Jordan Ealey did much of the damage that night, pouring in 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help the Bulldogs pull away.
Beyond the individual matchups, Saturday’s game carries clear implications in the standings. Tougaloo will look to maintain its HBCUAC West Division lead and continue to build separation after Thursday’s win over Philander Smith. Wiley, facing a challenging stretch of conference games, views the contest as an opportunity to reset the season’s trajectory, by picking up a signature road win.
