Austin Catholic High School’s Crusaders built a commanding lead Friday night and defeated Detroit Cristo Rey 7-0 in a match that was called at halftime because of weather.
The Crusaders wasted little time taking control. Isabella Bongiovanni scored the first goal of the match, setting the tone for an explosive opening half. Bongiovanni finished with two goals, while Helena Lucas also scored twice as Austin Catholic piled up seven goals before the break.
Rose O'Connor and Emerson Minjoe each added a goal, and Keely Bieske turned in one of the team’s most complete performances with a goal and two assists. Elena Ferri helped drive the attack with three assists, and Rebecca Shrodes added two more assists as the Crusaders consistently created dangerous chances in the Wolves end.
Austin Catholic’s control of the match extended beyond the attack. Sophia Pozzuoli posted the clean sheet in goal, anchoring a defensive effort that kept Detroit Cristo Rey off the scoreboard and prevented any momentum from building on the other side.
Starting under clear skies with temperatures in the low 70s at kickoff, the match featured a fast, efficient first-half performance from the Crusaders before weather forced an early end. Even with the shortened night, Austin Catholic had already delivered a decisive result behind balanced scoring, sharp distribution and a complete defensive effort.
