Late Free Kick Pulls Austin Catholic Close in 4-3 Loss to Fitzgerald

Austin Catholic’s late comeback fell one goal short Tuesday as Fitzgerald held on for a 4-3 victory against Austin Catholic High School Fitzgerald’s fourth goal proved decisive after Evan Price converted a free kick late in the match to bring the Crusaders within one, but Austin Catholic could not find an equalizer before time expired.
Austin Catholic carried a 2-1 lead into halftime. Austin Catholic then had to adjust after an injury sidelined the team’s leading scorer this season. Despite the loss, the Crusaders continued attacking and competed through the final whistle.
Fitzgerald increased its pressure after halftime and scored three goals in the second half. Austin Catholic scoring was provided by Michael Beres with two goals of its own, in a great attacking performance; while, Evan Price supplied the Crusaders’ third goal with the late free kick that gave Austin Catholic a chance to pull even.
At the other end, Keeper Jarrett Thompson made several outstanding saves to keep the Crusaders close as Fitzgerald pushed forward. Those stops allowed Austin Catholic to remain in contention and set up the late rally. The Crusaders battled from start to finish on a mainly clear evening with a game-time temperature of 77 degrees.
Austin Catholic will return to action on the road against Bishop Foley at 7 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 11, 2026. The Crusaders will look to build on their three-goal attack and the persistence they showed during Tuesday’s match.
