Bay Boys Place 17th, Filiatraut Sets Record at Northeast Classic Invitational

AKRON, Ohio — The Bay High School Boy and Girls Swimming and Diving team turned in a strong showing against a largely Division I field Saturday at the Northeast Classic Invitational at the University of Akron, with the boys team placing 17th out of 44 teams and advancing multiple swims to the championship finals. Facing some of the deepest lineups in the region, the Rockets used a combination of record-breaking performances, relay strength and versatile individual efforts to post a top-20 finish in the large invitational.

Junior standout Luke Filiatraut headlined the day for Bay with one of the meet’s top individual performances. Filiatraut qualified first out of prelims in both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, setting the tone early against a predominantly Division I field. In the 200 freestyle finals, he finished third overall in 1:43.63, breaking his second Bay school record of the season in the event. The championship heat featured mostly Division I athletes, and Filiatraut was one of only two Division II swimmers in the 200 freestyle final, underscoring the level of competition he faced.

Filiatraut added another podium-level result in the 100 butterfly, where he returned in the evening session to place seventh overall in 51.21. His performance in both events provided a significant boost to Bay’s team scoring and reinforced his status as one of the region’s top Division II swimmers. Across prelims and finals, his workload and consistency helped keep the Rockets in contention throughout the meet and highlighted the program’s ability to match up with high-end opposition as the postseason approaches.

Senior Ollie Brown delivered a productive day of his own, reaching finals in two individual events and supplying key points for the Rockets. Brown finished 14th overall in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.86, navigating one of the meet’s most demanding events with a balanced effort across all four strokes. He added a 17th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.23, giving Bay another finals presence and demonstrating the kind of versatility that will be valuable in upcoming championship meets.

The Rockets’ relays were also a highlight in Akron. Bay’s 200 medley relay of Filiatraut, Brown, John Allan and Ilias Ghaffari won prelims and advanced to finals, ultimately posting a 1:41.33 in a deep and competitive relay field. The group’s ability to qualify first out of prelims against a largely Division I lineup showcased both front-line talent and relay chemistry. Their finals performance continued to add to Bay’s scoring total in an event that featured strong entries from across the state.

Bay closed the meet on a strong note in the 400 freestyle relay, where Filiatraut, Brown, Ghaffari and Sam Farrar combined to earn another finals swim and cap the day with a time of 3:23.63. The relay’s advancement to the evening session and solid finish helped secure the Rockets’ position in the team standings and reflected the program’s depth across multiple freestyle legs. Together with the medley relay, Bay’s relay performances underscored the team’s ability to compete not only in individual events but also in high-pressure, team-oriented races.

With multiple finalists, a school record and a 17th-place team finish in a meet dominated by Division I programs, Bay left Akron with momentum and confidence. The blend of record-setting swims, relay success and emerging contributors reinforced the Rockets’ status as a resilient and upward-trending program. Led by Filiatraut and supported by athletes like Brown, Ghaffari, Allan and Farrar, Bay enters the stretch run of the season well-positioned for conference and sectional competition and prepared to contend against high-level opposition in the postseason.
