Senior Captain Anne Weber (third from right) with fellow distance runners celebrating her new 3200m Run PR!

On a cold and drizzly day, the Bay Girls Track & Field took to the track Saturday at the 70th Annual Comet Relays in Amherst, with the Rockets competing in one of the area’s established invitational meets, taking 14th place out of 21 teams.

Each part of the team contributed to the scores, with the field events starting the scoring for the team with the Shot Put Relay team of Riley Mitchell, Chloe Pyros, and Leila Ghaffari taking 6th place. Individually, Riley continued her fantastic season, taking 10th overall.

In the sprints, Annie Wilmitch held her own against some of the best sprinters in Northeast Ohio, also taking 6th, while she, Jaiden Latimer-Smith, Ruby Render, and Evin Mason would later tag-team to win their heat in the Sprint Medley Relay with Evin showing an impressive kick throughout. Evin would later rejoin Ruby and McKenna as well as Birdie Krueger to do the same thing in the final event of the day, the 4x400m Relay.

The story of the day, though, was indeed the distance team, as senior Anne Weber started the running in the 3200m, narrowly missing out on scoring with a 9th place finish but setting a new PR by almost eight seconds! Her teammate, freshman Maya Gonzalez would later run the 1600m in one of the most anticipated events of the day, and the event didn't disappoint with Maya running right behind one of the best distance runners in all of Ohio. Finishing less than a second behind, Maya secured a runner-up finish with not only a new PR, but another new BHS school record for the second time in two weeks! Full results can be found here.

Congratulations to all the girls who competed at one of the most premier events in the area, and good luck in the coming week as the Lady Rockets host their final home dual meet (which is also Senior Night!) and then travel to Avon Reynolds Relays.
