Bay Girls Track & Field Compete, Break Records at Regionals!
The Bay Girls Track and Field team enjoyed two days of competition at the Division 2 Regional Championships hosted by North Royalton High School, ending their run with four personal bests, two new records, and a State qualifier in two events.
As they've done all season, senior's Riley Mitchell and Anne Weber started the meet for the Lady Rockets, as Riley qualified to Regionals for the first time in the Shot Put while Anne did the same in both the 4x800m Relay and the 3200m Run. Both put in fine final performances, with Anne helping lead the 9th grade relay crew of Kai Ripley, Chloe Vincent, and Maya Gonzalez to a season best time, finishing 12th overall. Anne would then return Friday to run only two seconds off her personal best in the 3200m Run to cap a fantastic two-year run with the team. Riley, meanwhile, would narrowly miss qualifying to finals in the Shot Put in what was a fantastic four-year, two-time individual CWC championship career.
In the sprints, Annie Willmitch narrowly missed her PR in the 100m Dash but later set a new personal best in the 200m Dash, earning the 4th best individual 200m Dash time in school history! Joining her on the track were 4x200m Relay teammates Birdie Krueger, McKenna Adkins, and Ruby Render. All told, the Lady Rockets sent 10 total individuals to Regionals over the course of nine events, earning valuable big meet experience that will no doubt pay dividends next season.
Two days later, sophomore Gigi Waters, qualifying to Regionals for the first time in her career, started the day in the Pole Vault, jumping - and clearing - an opening height that was equal to her PR! On the track, freshman Maya Gonzalez competed in both the 1600m Run and 800m Run, putting on a fantastic show in both events. In the former, Maya not only qualified to the State Championships, but she broke her own record en route to a 3rd place finish. Only 45 minutes later, she returned, and running at the lead of the pack for the duration, she earned a runner-up finish that earned her a second State Championship birth while breaking yet another record, this time in the 800m run! A truly remarkable performance considering the competition and the timing, Maya will be representing the Lady Rockets at next week's State Championships in Columbus!
Congratulations to the entire team on a great week of track and good luck to May next week!
