Bay Girls Swimming & Diving Edges Lakewood in 92-90 Thriller; Rockets Turn In Standout Swims on Both Sides

Gabby Kariotakis | Bay High School | Jan 8, 2026

The Bay Rockets Girls Swim and Dive team pulled out a narrow 92-90 victory over Lakewood High School in a dual meet Wednesday night at the North Olmsted Rec Center, while the Boys team turned in several standout efforts in a competitive 102-69 result. The meet featured multiple double-event winners, key relay sweeps and strong diving and individual performances across both squads.

On the girls side, Bay was led by dominant outings from Ruby Render and Moriah Murtha, who each swept their individual events to anchor the Rockets’ scoring. Render claimed victories in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, while Murtha matched that feat by taking first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Their wins helped build the foundation for the Rockets’ two-point margin in the final team tally.

The Rockets’ depth proved just as important as their wins. Emery Ziemnik captured the 100 backstroke and added valuable points with a strong third-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Sprint specialist Lily Wavak contributed a pair of runner-up finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while distance swimmer Mia Tosi placed second in the 500 freestyle to bolster Bay’s mid-meet surge. In the backstroke, Elyse Edelman chipped in a third-place finish, and Lydia Murtha added a key second place in the 100 breaststroke to help secure the tight team result.

In diving, Anika Schultz delivered an important second-place finish, keeping Bay within striking distance on the board and setting up the swimmers for the late-meet push. The Rockets then capitalized in the relays, where the girls 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay swept the scoring. Bay’s A relays touched first and the B relays added third-place points in both events, giving the Rockets critical margins in two of the night’s highest-value races.

On the boys side, Bay showcased multiple top-line performances despite the overall team decision. Distance and mid-distance standout Luke Filiatraut led the way by winning both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, controlling the pace in each race to put Bay at the front of the field. Versatility was on display from Ollie Brown, who matched Filiatraut’s double-win effort by taking first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, giving the Rockets two multi-event winners in the boys lineup.

The Rockets also picked up several key podium finishes from their boys swimmers. Liam Jager earned second place in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Sam Farrar did the same in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, adding consistent scoring in sprint and stroke events. Jason Hartzell notched a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle, and Robert Abramov posted a pair of third-place showings in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke to round out a strong collection of individual results.

Bay closed the meet with a statement performance in the boys 400 freestyle relay, where the Rockets dominated the field to claim first place. Combined with the girls’ relay sweeps and multiple double-event winners on both sides, the Rockets left the North Olmsted Rec Center with a narrow girls victory, a hard-fought boys effort and momentum heading into the next stretch of the season.
