Bay Girls Finish Third Behind Gonzalez’s Runner-Up Race at Boardman Spartan Invitational

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Bay’s girls varsity cross country team placed third among 28 Division II teams at the Boardman Spartan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19, led by Maya Gonzalez’s runner-up finish. The Rockets scored 145 points, trailing champion Aurora (107) and Westlake (129).
Gonzalez established Bay’s position near the front of the field by completing the course in 18 minutes, 9 seconds. She finished second overall and gave the Rockets a low number at the top of their scoring lineup, providing the foundation for a top-three team result in a deep field.
Bay’s next two runners formed a productive pairing in the top 20. Anika Schulz finished 15th in 20:08, and Kai Ripley followed in 19th at 20:27. Their 19-second separation helped the Rockets keep their scoring pack competitive as the race moved through the field. Clare Messmore added a 39th-place finish in 21:00, giving Bay four runners among the first 40 finishers.
Ainsley Scheid completed the Rockets’ five-runner scoring group, placing 70th in 21:43. The combination of Gonzalez’s front-running performance and the placement of Schulz, Ripley, Messmore and Scheid secured Bay’s 145-point total. The Rockets finished 23 points ahead of fourth-place Shaker Heights and 33 ahead of fifth-place Brecksville.
Bay also received varsity finishes from Nolie Piktel, who placed 88th in 22:08, Elyse Mull, who was 89th in 22:13, and Elyse Edelman, who crossed in 114th at 22:49. Piktel and Mull finished only five seconds apart, extending the Rockets’ pack through the sixth and seventh positions.
The Rockets added three strong performances in the girls open race, which did not include team scoring. Lily Lawnicki placed third in 21:49, Claire Schearer finished 18th in 23:33, and Nora Miller took 23rd in 24:12. Their results complemented a varsity effort that put Bay on the podium against one of the meet’s largest Division II fields.
