Bay Girls Track & Field Places 7th at Avon Invitational!
The Bay Girls Track and Field team finished seventh out of 16 teams Friday at the 48th Avon Invitational in Avon, with the Lady Rockets leaning on key performances from Maya Gonzalez and Annie Willmitch to pace the meet result.
It was senior Riley Mitchell, though, that started the scoring for the team with another outstanding day in the field events, taking 3rd and 9th in the Shot Put and Discus, respectively. Meanwhile, fellow senior Leila Ghaffari took 15th in the former while junior Susie Hargett took 11th in the latter. In the Pole Vault, sophomore Gigi Waters and freshman Anika Schulz both scored, with Anika enjoying a new PR!
On the track, junior Annie Willmitch continued to lead the way, setting two new personal bests, first in the 100, taking 3rd, and later in the day in the 200, taking 4th. Sophomore Ruby Render would do the same, as she also enjoyed two new PR's, one in the 200 and one in the 400. Ruby and Annie would also help both the 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams, and while neither scored in the meet, the group of McKenna Adkins, Birdie, Krueger, and Evin Mason, with the help of freshman Meg Webster who was pulled in at the last minute to help due to injury, finished ahead of their CWC counterparts, showing they're getting ready for the Conference Championships in two weeks time!
In the 100m hurdles, junior Ainsley Scheid enjoyed a PR while McKenna did the same in the 300 hurdles with a breakout race en route to finishing 8th overall.
Maya Gonzalez continued her fantastic season in the distance events, this time doubling up, scoring in both the 1600 and the 800. In a repeat of last week's Comet Relays finish, Maya and Avon's Kaitlyn Reese, one of the premier distance runners in the state of Ohio, ran lap for lap together, with Maya taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively, and setting a new PR in both events. Indeed, in the 1600, this is the third straight meet in which the freshman has done so, narrowly missing breaking the five minute mark with a finish of 5:00.63! Maya wasn't alone however, and junior Bridget Rettig ran a great season best in the 800, freshmen Clare Messmore and Kai Ripley ran a fantastic team race to finish 7th and 9th in the 3200, and senior Anne Weber set a new PR for the second week in a row in taking 8th place in the 1600!

Congratulations to all the girls who participated in one of the most competitive meets of the year! Going forward, the Lady Rockets will head to Parma on Tuesday for their final dual meet of the season and then to the Rocky River Bell Invitational for their final regular season meet!
