Bay Girls Place Third at Strongsville Mustang Invitational Behind Tight Pack

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Bay’s girls varsity cross country team placed third among 19 scoring teams at the The Varsity Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26, finishing with 126 points behind a tightly grouped top four. Anika Schulz led the Rockets in 14th place with a 5K time of 19 minutes, 42 seconds, and Clare Messmore followed one spot later in 19:51.
The Rockets built their team finish through pack running near the front of the field. Kai Ripley placed 22nd in a personal-best 19:55, and Maya Gonzalez crossed in 24th at 20:02. Bay’s first four runners finished within 20 seconds of one another, giving the team a strong foundation before Ainsley Schied completed its scoring five in 59th place with a personal-best 21:13.
Bay’s depth continued immediately behind Schied. Nolie Piktel also finished in 21:13 and placed 60th, while Elyse Edelman took 74th in 21:38. Lily Lawnicki ran a personal-best 21:40 to finish 77th, and Elyse Mull placed 83rd in 21:45. The close grouping gave the Rockets six runners between 21:13 and 21:45 and reinforced the team’s pack approach throughout the lineup.
Northville won the varsity meet with 38 points, followed by Perrysburg with 111. Bay finished 18 points ahead of fourth-place Woodridge, which scored 144. Cleveland St. Joe’s placed fifth, Westlake was sixth with 157, and Medina followed with 190. Rocky River, Walsh Jesuit and Strongsville completed the top 10.
The Rockets also placed sixth among 14 teams in the Open race with 194 points. Nora Miller led Bay in 30th place with a personal-best 23:15. Lena Coppola finished 53rd in a personal-best 24:03, and Evin Mason was directly behind in 54th, also recording a personal best. That consecutive finish provided another example of Bay runners working through the field together.
Bay had 29 runners compete across the varsity and Open races in partly cloudy conditions that began around 46 degrees. Fifteen Rockets recorded personal-best 5K times, with Ripley, Schied and Lawnicki doing so in the varsity race and Miller, Coppola and Mason leading the personal-best performances in the Open.
