Bay Girls Varsity Wins Black Division as Maya Gonzalez Sets School Record

Bay Girls Varsity opened the season with a Black Division championship Sunday at the Hoka Night XC Showcase at Spire, placing five runners among the top 27 to finish with 55 points. Maya Gonzalez led the Rockets by winning the race in 18 minutes, 12.20 seconds, setting a Bay school record for girls 5K cross country.
The Rockets finished well ahead of Cleveland St. Joe's, which placed second with 121 points, and Amherst Steele, which took third with 122. Bay also topped 35 other teams in a deep season-opening field, using its front-running strength and a compact scoring pack to create the decisive margin.
Behind Maya Gonzalez's record-setting performance, Clare Messmore placed ninth in 20:16. Anika Schulz followed in 11th at 20:26, Kai Ripley finished 13th in 20:30, and Elyse Edelma completed Bay's five-runner scoring group by taking 27th in 21:20. That placed each of the Rockets' scorers inside the top 27 and gave Bay the pack presence needed to secure the division victory.
Bay continued to send runners across the line in quick succession. Chloe Vincent placed 39th in 21:54, followed by Nolie Piktel in 45th at 21:57. Ainsley Scheid finished 50th in 22:04, and Elyse Mull was one place behind in 22:06. Claire Schearer added a 135th-place finish in 23:49. The short gaps among several Rockets reflected the team's pack-running approach after the lead group had established Bay near the front.
The Rockets also earned a top-five team result in the Open race. the Bay Girls finished fifth with 159 points, led by Lily Ĺawnicki's eighth-place performance in 22:34. Combined with the varsity division title and Maya Gonzalez's school record, the Open result gave Bay a strong start across both races at its first meet of the season.
