Bay Girls Win Wooster Invitational by One Point as Gonzalez Sets School Record

WOOSTER, Ohio - Bay captured the Division II girls championship at the Wooster Invitational on Saturday, edging Hudson by one point in a 29-team race. The Rockets finished with 150 points, while Hudson scored 151 and Brecksville placed third with 161. Maya Gonzalez led Bay by winning the 5-kilometer race in a school-record time of 17 minutes, 53.33 seconds.
Gonzalez’s performance also marked a personal record and put the Rockets at the front of a field featuring 297 runners. Competing in light rain and a temperature of about 72 degrees, Gonzalez set the pace while Bay assembled the scoring finishes it needed behind her to secure the narrow team victory.
Anika Schulz was Bay’s second runner across the finish line, taking 27th in 19:34. Clare Messmore followed closely in 33rd at 19:46, giving the Rockets two runners within six places and 12 seconds of each other. Kai Ripley added a personal-record time of 20:20 to finish 51st, and Nolie Piktel completed Bay’s scoring five by placing 118th in 21:23.
That scoring group balanced Gonzalez’s victory with solid positioning through the middle of the field. With Hudson only one point back and Brecksville 11 points behind, every place gained by Bay’s pack contributed to the championship. Boardman finished fourth with 195 points, followed by Wadsworth with 219 and Medina Highland with 231.
The Rockets also received depth from four additional finishers. Elyse Edelman placed 131st in 21:37, Elyse Mull was 145th in 21:53 and Lili Lawnicki recorded a personal-best 22:16 to take 166th. Claire Schearer completed Bay’s lineup in 231st place with a time of 23:37.
Tallmadge, Louisville and Revere each scored 278 points to occupy seventh through ninth in the official standings, while Amherst Steele rounded out the top 10 with 282. At the top, Bay’s combination of Gonzalez’s record-setting win, close running from Schulz and Messmore and contributions throughout the lineup delivered the Rockets the invitational title by the smallest possible margin.
