Bay High School Rockets Make a Splash at OHSAA Sectionals

Bay High School's Swimming & Diving team experienced significant success at the OHSAA Sectional meet on February 7, 2025, with both boys and girls teams delivering strong performances. This standout showing led 15 athletes to qualify for Districts, highlighting an exceptional day of competition for the Rockets. The boys team finished 4th among 26 competitors, scoring 210 points, while the girls outdid themselves by securing the 2nd place out of 28 with 183 points. Sophomore Luke Filiatraut was a leading figure for the boys, placing 2nd in the 100 butterfly and securing an automatic Districts spot, and also finishing 6th in the 100 backstroke to grab his second Districts qualification. For the girls, freshman Ruby Render stole the spotlight, placing 4th in the 200 freestyle and 3rd in the 100 freestyle, earning her Districts bids in both events. Additionally, multiple Rocket swimmers achieved qualification across various events. Aaron Bernys (200 free/500 free), Peyton Myers (50 free/100 free), John Allan (50 free/100 fly), and Ollie Brown (100 free/100 breaststroke), Lily Wavak (50 free/100 free), Emery Ziemnik (200 IM/ 100 fly) all qualified in both of their individual events, showcasing the depth and talent within Bay Rockets' squad. Contributions were also notable from individual qualifiers Gwynn Miller (200 free), Jen Harman (50 free), Moriah Murtha (100 free) and Cecilia Gomez (500 free), all securing places at the upcoming District meet, The schools' relay teams were just as impressive, with every relay team from Bay High making it to Districts. The girls' teams competed fiercely in the 200 medley relay (Harman, Murtha, Ziemnik, Wavak), 200 freestyle relay (Wavak, Murtha, Harman, Render), and 400 freestyle relay (Ziemnik, Harman, Miller, Render) , while the boys showcased their strength in the same categories. 200 medley relay (Filiatraut, Brown, Bernys, Myers), 200 freestyle relay (Allan, Sam Farrar, Liam Jager, Ilias Ghaffari) and 400 freestyle relay (Bernys, Myers, Brown, Filiatraut). It is worth noting that the girls 200 free relay and boys 400 free relay finished in 2nd place both securing automatic District spots. With a myriad of personal bests and top finishes, the Bay Rockets are well-prepared and eager to take on the challenges awaiting at the District competition. As they train and refine their techniques, the determination and skill of these young athletes promise further accomplishments in their swimming careers.
