Bay High School’s swimming and diving program closed its season with a strong showing at the OHSAA State Tournament in Canton, highlighted by multiple top-five finishes, a new school record and several state finals appearances. The Rockets were led by junior standout Luke Filiatraut, who placed third in the state in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, while Bay’s relays and veteran leaders added key performances on the championship stage.
Filiatraut delivered the top individual finish of the meet for Bay in the 200 freestyle, racing to third in the state with a time of 1:41.74. The swim not only put him on the podium in one of the meet’s premier events but also broke the Bay High School record in the event, underscoring the progression he has shown throughout the season. His performance in the 200 freestyle established him among the state’s elite mid-distance swimmers and provided a major scoring boost for the Rockets.
He added another high finish in the 100 butterfly, placing fifth in the state with a time of 50.41. Competing against some of the fastest flyers in Ohio, Filiatraut again reached the championship heat and remained in contention throughout the race. The pair of top-five individual finishes gave Bay a reliable presence in the finals and capped an impressive meet for the junior, who also played a central role on both Rocket relays.
Bay’s boys 200 medley relay of Filiatraut, Ollie Brown, John Allan and Ilias Ghaffari capped a dominant season with a 13th-place finish in the state. The quartet, which had “dominated the field all year” according to the program, advanced to the state meet and maintained its competitive form against the deepest field of the season. Their performance in Canton marked a fitting conclusion to a relay campaign that consistently set the tone for Bay in duals and invitationals.
The boys 400 freestyle relay of Filiatraut, Brown, Ghaffari and Sam Farrar also reached the state meet and finished 19th in Ohio. The Rockets’ depth was on display in the longer relay, which brought together sprint and middle-distance strengths to secure another scoring opportunity on the final day of the season. The combination of two state-qualifying relays demonstrated the balance of Bay’s lineup and the value of its core group of upperclassmen and underclassmen.
Senior captain Ollie Brown closed his Bay career with two individual swims at the state level. Brown placed 17th in the state in the 200 individual medley and 24th in the 100 breaststroke, adding important points and representation for the Rockets. A key asset to the team throughout the year, Brown consistently scored in dual meets and invites and served as an “incredible captain,” helping guide a roster that blended experienced leaders with emerging talents.
On the girls side, sophomore Ruby Render also made her mark at Canton, placing 29th in the state. Her performance as an underclassman signals a promising future for Bay’s girls program, as she gains state-level experience early in her career. With Render’s development and the continued growth she leaves the state meet with tangible results and momentum heading into next season.
Overall, Bay High School’s trip to the OHSAA State Tournament showcased both high-end individual talent and relay depth. A school record, multiple top-five finishes, and several state relay entries highlighted a successful campaign for the Rockets, while the leadership of seniors like Brown and the emergence of younger swimmers position the program well for the years ahead.
